Sgt Fitness: “workout coach for the Twitter generation”

Sgt Fitness:

...is a dual purpose app: its primary purpose is to help keep you fit, by reminding you to keep moving, and scheduling bursts of metabolism boosting exercise throughout the day. Its secondary purpose is to raise $1,000,000 for charity.

Help me get 1,000,000 users of Sgt Fitness by Dec. 2011, and I pledge to donate $1,000,000 of the proceeds to charity. And you get to vote for which charities receive the money.

The bursts of exercise are all simple exercises that you can do anywhere, anytime, using just your own body’s muscles. Do them in your office, at home, or maybe even while you’re out shopping. The exercises are all easy to do, commonly known physical activities: situps, pushups, squats, laps, stairs, stretching and balance. Your drills come in different levels or quantities, with some optional variations. For example, with pushups, you might be instructed to do 15, 20, 25 or 30, and you may be given the option to choose “desk” or “wall” pushup variations.

Just install the app, run it, and let it schedule some exercise reminders for you. As you move on with your day, Sgt Fitness will remind you as you go, via local notification popups, to include a little exercise in your busy schedule. Doing small bursts of physical activity all day long will help kick your metabolism into higher gear: definitely an improvement over sitting at your computer all day long.

Research shows that keeping yourself active like this is good for you. The American Council for Exercise has several good online articles you can read for more information. For example, this article ( http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/studies/10kStudy2007.pdf ) compares the average activity levels of different occupations, and encourages you to aim for 10,000 steps a day of movement. In this one, ( http://www.acefitness.org/article/3067/ ), a Mayo Clinic researcher says “even minor changes in physical activity throughout the day can increase daily energy expenditure by 20%.” Find more articles like these here: http://www.acefitness.org/getfit/research.aspx

Like a drill sergeant at boot camp, Sgt Fitness helps to keep you on the straight and narrow, with a dose of self-discipline right in your pocket. Don’t be lazy, private! Get up and do something!

The Charity Pledge:

I pledge to donate $1.05 to charity for every copy of Sgt Fitness purchased in the app store.

The Goal:

Donate $1,000,000 to charity in Dec. 2011. Spread the word. We need 1,000,000 users by Dec. 15, 2011 to reach our goal of donating all that money to charity this year!

Now, drop and give me 20!
